A Council of WarGen. Gillies: “We are getting on beautifully. That idea of yours of colonial federation for purposes of defence is immense it proves that we are ready to sink all intercolonial jealousies in a common cause. Now, I have an idea. Melbourne, you know, being the most important city in the Colonies, of course, had better be headquarters.”
Gen. Parkes: “Ha-hum—er—I mean—that is, after all, perhaps, there is no immediate danger. Suppose we talk of some other subject of intercolonial interest.”
